Westwood Winter Trees

30th December 2011
This photograph was taken during our post Christmas walk with the St Aidan's Church Walking Group. Each year we have a short family ramble immediately after Christmas. This year we walked around Beverley Westwood, with 27 walkers, aged from 6 weeks to 71 years. The weather forecast was for an overcast morning and so I was in two minds weather it was worth taking my DSLR. However, the weather turned out bright and ideal for some winter shots on the Westwood.

I was attracted to the winter trees and the old mill which were visible along the horizon. This shot was taken with my Canon 60D, fitted with a Canon EFS 17-85mm lens (59mm 1/320sec/f14/ISO100/RAW).

Due to the walk I didn't have as much time as I would have liked - it would have been good to get closer to the trees and to set up a tripod and use a graduated filter.

The picture was edited in Photoshop Elements and I felt like it would make a good black and white print, made stronger by using an infrared effect to darken the sky. I then pushed this a little further by adding some motion blur to the sky and mist effect to the land to give a more dream like picture.
